FM revolution

hello, my name is julie and i'm an MS4, transitioning into my future identity as a family physician.

i'm tired of the various barriers that are preventing people from entering the FM (family medicine) specialty. from glaring discrepancies in salary to poor lifestyle to myths about primary care physicians-- we are losing amazing potential family docs to other higher-paying specialities that tend to offer better lifestyle and more prestige because our society doesn't value primary care as much as it should. people need to understand that a strong primary care base in our society is the solution to minimizing health disparities, improving outcomes, reducing health care spending, and shifting care emphasis to a more preventative and proactive-oriented model, rather than a reactive model utilizing a tertiary care emphasis that is a costly and less effective long-term solution to minimizing disease burden.

i want to be a part of the family medicine revolution. i didn't use such words before but recently came across a small group of family docs in cali who are re-envisioning and re-branding the specialty to dispel myths and emphasize the need for a greater primary care emphasis in our health care system. http://www.familymedicinerevolution.org/

as i've been traversing the interview trail, it has been inspiring to cross paths with some amazing people in the field of FM with great ideas and an incredible energy that they are bringing to the profession. it's been exciting to share in that and think about how i will be able to be a part of something great very soon. i'm really looking forward to being a physician-leader that promotes the importance of primary care in our country. it's significant work that needs to be done on an individual and community level, and i'm excited to be a part of it.
